The holidays are just around the corner — a time to gather, laugh, and reconnect with the people who matter most. But with all the excitement (and noise!) of the season, it’s easy for conversations to get a little tricky. Whether you’re catching up at a big family dinner, chatting with old friends at your favorite restaurant, or taking in ICE! at the Gaylord Texan, here are a few simple tips to help you stay connected and enjoy every moment.
1. Speak clearly
Use a natural tone and moderate pace — there’s no need to shout. Shouting can actually make speech harder to understand. Try to enunciate clearly without exaggerating, and pause between phrases so your listener has time to keep up. And remember, it’s much easier to follow a conversation when you’re facing each other (and not mid-bite!).
2. Use visual cues
Good communication isn’t just about words. Make sure you can see your conversation partner’s face and pay attention to their gestures and expressions — these little cues can make a big difference. If possible, choose a well-lit spot so you can see each other clearly.
3. Reduce background noise
The holidays can be loud! If you can, turn down background music or TV noise, or move to a quieter spot like a hallway, balcony, or corner of the room. In restaurants, ask to sit away from speakers, kitchens, or busy walkways. And if the weather’s nice, outdoor seating often makes it easier to hear (and adds a festive touch).
4. Rephrase instead of repeat
If someone doesn’t catch what you said, try saying it a different way. For example, instead of repeating, “Did you see ICE!?”, you might say, “Did you go to the Gaylord Texan to see ICE! this year?”
And if you’re the one having trouble understanding, it’s okay to ask for a rephrase, too — try, “Can you say that another way?” instead of just “What?”
No matter your hearing ability, these tips can help make your holiday gatherings more enjoyable and meaningful.
